While some this example may sound like just another confirmation of the male pervs out there, the recurrence and commonality of it is what is worrying. In fact Im always surprised to learn that my sister could be witness to such an incident. Stats seem to indicate that trend.
Lets leave side the stories and think about the gesture for a second and its meaning. This indicates a serious problem which isnt linked to some defect in maleness but to a defect in the upbringing. Whatever this might be due to, its a fact and has to be dealt with. Pragmatism and sensibility is required because its not a matter of having a criminal mind.
I feel that such men, who behave in such indecent ways have a tough time coping with their impulses. They have to receive counselling to teach them ways and means to properly channel their energies. Sexuality isnt as taboo as a decade ago, it is a fact of life and has to be treated thus.
I dont exclude having an MSPCA type patrol for these men but recommend a different treatment once caught.
There is a final aspect to this issue which is to be thought about. While we may feel reassured that "nothing happened" (as I reacted), in fact there is the possibility of this being the tip of the iceberg. If it is and if some of those men have tresspassed and committed acts that are one of the MOST horrific possible against an individual. Then how do provide support and assistance to the victims? Mauritius being as small as it with coupled with the orthodoxy of certain communities, a rape can have a devastating effect on an individual and his entourage.
The emotional, social and psychologic tensions it engenders requires more than common sense and inner strength to cope with. It requires external support and help. A luxury which is not always present in the vicinity of a person. But HELP exists!!
Befrienders Mauritius (800 9393)is one, PILS (800 5001) could be another.
Their respective fields differ from the topic spoken about here but they are effective listeners and can serve as good guides and counsellors in most traumatic life's moments.
